A dozen horses, 13,000 cartridges, 132 canapes, 40,000 tea bags and a red telephone booth barely scratch the surface of the inventory that the British Olympic Association sent to Japan for the Tokyo Games delayed this summer.

Even in the best of circumstances, get GB team to every Olympics and back is a logistical test of epic proportions.

‘Notre équipe à la BOA [HQ] is relatively small with only about 50 employees and organizing the Games under normal circumstances is a huge undertaking. When you consider that we had to plan and reschedule the Games because of Covid, then you realize what an incredible effort it has been to take the team to Tokyo.

Barring a late hiccup, 375 Team GB athletes will compete in Tokyo, the most of any Games on foreign soil since the 389 who went to Spain 29 years ago. They will also be accompanied by more than 500 coaches and other support staff.

Instead of dating on a few flights and coming back together once the Games are over, as would be typical, athletes from different sports will travel in waves of dozens of flights over 28 days on the outward and return trip.

An iconic red phone booth was also delivered to Tokyo (not pictured)

“This is our biggest team since Barcelona 1992, and we will be leaving throughout July to participate in what will be an incredibly special and emotional Games for everyone involved,” England said.

Prior to the start, each member of the Team GB delegation will have attended one of 21 kitting out days at the NEC Birmingham, where they will have received 100,000 items of Adidas team clothing. This corresponds to an average of 114 kit pieces per person across the delegation.

Yet this is only a small part of a logistics operation that has been planned for years, then overhauled and revamped for this COVID era. Our accompanying panel provides an overview of what was sent to Japan.

“The majority of our freight is focused on creating the ideal performance environment for athletes above all,” England said. “We are bringing out a lot of important medical supplies and performance equipment, which will be used in our preparation camp and a facility we call our Performance Lodge, both of which are essentially high performance training centers.

“One of the big differences this time around is the amount of Covid mitigation supplies, including face masks, PPE, disinfectants, and some specialized equipment such as self-disinfecting button covers for elevators.

Union Jack furniture was also sent to make our athletes feel at home in Tokyo

“I don’t think people realize it, but when we get to the Olympic Village we basically inherit a fairly functional and bare new apartment building. We need to equip it and make it a home before the athletes arrive. So we supply everything from Union Flag doormats to kettles, coffee pods, tea bags, clocks, spare toothbrushes, bins, and more.

“I think Tom Daley attributes his love of Union Flag furniture to the time he has spent in the Olympic Village over the years!”

“The freight left on a container ship in March and was put into storage before being transferred to our sites over the next few weeks. Most of all, we work very hard to make sure that we are offsetting all of our carbon emissions and this is only part of our sustainability plan as an organization, which is constantly improving, with the aim of becoming positive. carbon in the years to come from the Games.
