The report also showed a 178% increase in pageviews for the term ‘vegan leather’ in 2021, with sneakers being the most searched category for vegan pieces. Lyst saw a 131% increase in year-over-year demand for plant-tinted pieces and a 38% increase in searches for clothing made from mushroom-based materials.
The results highlight a trend towards sustainable and environmentally friendly fashion options among consumers. Major footwear brands such as Clarks, Crocs, Nike and Adidas have all announced initiatives to reduce their impact on the environment with new eco-friendly products. In April, Clarks Originals launched vegan versions of its iconic Desert Boot and Wallabee silhouettes. That same month, Adidas said it will seek to create more environmentally friendly sneakers using Mylo, a substance found in the underground roots of fungi. And earlier this month, Crocs started to introduce a new bio-based Croslite material in its product lines to help it reduce its carbon footprint per pair of Crocs shoes by 50% by 2030.
Some companies have based their entire business model on this goal of sustainability. Allbirds, which was founded in 2015 with the aim of creating better shoes and clothing for the planet, said in its IPO filing in August that it hoped to pave the way for a “public offering of shares. sustainable, or SPO “. This new model involves working with third-party organizations to ensure that companies have well-defined environmental and social goals when they go public.
The trends on Lyst also indicated an increase in resale demand. The platform saw a 117% increased demand for recycled and recycled items on Lyst year over year, with a 321% spike in searches for recycled jeans.
The second-hand market is expected to more than double to $ 77 billion over the next five years, according to ThredUp’s 2021 resale report released in June. Peer-to-peer resale platforms like Poshmark and Depop have grown in popularity in recent years, with some companies like Lululemon and Patagonia using third-party companies like Trove to facilitate the resale of their brands.
Alongside the report, Lyst features six emerging eco-responsible designers in the report and on its website and social media accounts.
“Our role and responsibility is to inspire and empower fashion enthusiasts to make informed purchasing decisions,” said Lyst Chief Strategy Officer Nomfundo Mphuthi. “We want to help customers buy better by providing hyper-personalized recommendations from the world’s largest online assortment. “
