Major League Soccer and Continental Tire team up for 9th Annual Kick Childhood Cancer Campaign

MLS, MLS WORKS – the League’s social responsibility platform – and Continental Tire are once again teaming up to support Childhood Cancer Awareness Month with the 9th Annual “Kicking Childhood Cancer » childhood cancer awareness and fundraising campaign.

In 2022, the Childhood cancer kick (KCC) will again benefit the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), the world’s largest organization devoted exclusively to childhood and adolescent cancer research, uniting more than 10,000 childhood oncology experts in more than 200 leading pediatric hospitals worldwide. The Childhood cancer kick has enabled COG to strengthen research efforts across the full spectrum of childhood cancers, including Project: EveryChild – a unique project to capture the biological data and outcomes of every child diagnosed with cancer.

A new element of this year’s campaign – the Continental KCC Challenge – will give Sporting Kansas City fans the opportunity to donate to Children’s Mercy. Taking place throughout September, fans can visit www.TheContinentalKCCChallenge.com to donate to a local KCC charity on behalf of their favorite MLS club and Continental Tire will match each donation up to $50,000. A KCC auction of autographed and used jerseys for play from the September matches will also provide an additional fundraising opportunity from October 31 through November 14.

Awareness and funds for childhood cancer remain crucial as the cost of a single enrollment in a clinical trial such as Project:EveryChild can approach $10,000 per patient. According to COG, the League Childhood cancer kick has offset the costs of more than 40,000 clinical trial enrollments to date, with nearly 44,000 expected to be enrolled by the end of 2022.

As part of this year’s campaign, MLS and Continental Tire will partner with MLS Clubs to “surprise and delight” pediatric cancer patients and healthcare providers with unique experiences and acts of kindness throughout throughout the month. MLS clubs have also created personalized pajama bottoms to hand out to local pediatric cancer patients as a sign of comfort as they continue their journey in the fight against cancer.

As our partnership continues to grow year over year, our impact on children and their families in the United States and Canada who are affected by childhood cancer will also grow.

Throughout September, MLS, its clubs and players will raise awareness of the campaign through stadium activations, league social and digital channels, and national and regional broadcasts. Highlighted by the internationally recognized Color of Gold for Childhood Cancer, MLS Childhood cancer kick matches will feature:

  • An official adidas 2022 MLS WORKS Kick Childhood Cancer Commemorative Edition match ball will be used in match play
  • The adidas MLS Kick Childhood Cancer 2022 Pre-Game Tops will be worn by players during pre-game and warm-ups as well as on the bench, on the sidelines and during practice and as part of the awareness efforts of the community
  • Golden corner flags, goal nets and captain’s armbands
  • Gold ribbon jersey patches
  • PRO referees will wear bracelets with a Childhood cancer kick ribbon
